PCOS: A Metabolic Condition, Not Just a Reproductive One
One of the biggest shifts in understanding PCOS is that it's now seen as a metabolic disorder rather than only a reproductive issue. This means it affects not just our hormones but how our whole body functions, especially around insulin resistance and androgens (hormones). Researchers are still figuring out whether high insulin or high androgen levels come first, but either way, it’s clear that PCOS is more complex than previously thought.
Common Symptoms and Signs to Watch For
PCOS symptoms can vary but often include insulin resistance, irregular or absent ovulation, enlarged ovaries with multiple follicles, acne, unusual hair growth, weight gain, and more. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, these symptoms can be thought of as a buildup of "phlegm dampness," which blocks the body’s natural flow and affects ovulation.
How Lifestyle Affects PCOS
PCOS is definitely a modern disease, and the way we live today—especially with constant stress and our typical diets—has a big impact on PCOS. Unlike the occasional stress of our ancestors, modern stress feels constant, which may be one reason PCOS is so common now.
The Vitamin D Connection
Research shows that up to 85% of women with PCOS have low vitamin D levels, which affects mood, immune function, and so much more. Getting enough Vitamin D3 (with magnesium for better absorption) can make a real difference in how you feel day-to-day.
Weight Management: Small Changes, Big Impact
Weight is a sensitive topic, but even small reductions—just 5-10% of body weight—can make a difference in managing PCOS symptoms. I suggest simple steps like increasing daily movement, doing a little weight training, and focusing on balanced nutrition.
Eating for Blood Sugar Balance
Because PCOS is linked to insulin resistance, blood sugar balance is key. I share some dietary tips, like prioritizing protein and reducing refined carbs, that can help manage insulin levels and inflammation.
Exploring Natural Supplements
If you’re interested in alternatives to medications like Metformin, I talk about some herbs and supplements that might help, such as berberine and certain Chinese herbal remedies.
Mental Health Matters
PCOS often goes hand-in-hand with higher rates of anxiety and depression, possibly because of hormonal imbalances and low vitamin D. Taking care of mental health is just as important as managing physical symptoms.
New Research on Appetite Support
We've been hearing a lot about GLP-1 Agonists and the "surprise" Ozempic Pregnancies. In the video, I mention a plant-based alternative called Calocurb, a hops extract that’s being studied for its potential to reduce appetite naturally and impact on our body's natural stimulation of GLP-1. I’m not fully endorsing it yet, but I wanted to share it as an option for anyone curious.
I hope this video helps you feel more informed and supported on your PCOS journey. If you have any questions or experiences to share, I’d love to hear them!
'Ozempic Pregnancy'
We've all been hearing about "Ozempic" pregnancy, but Ozempic comes with potential risks and side effects. Explore natural GLP-1 agonists without the risk factors.
Vitamin D3
Supports healthy insulin response, glucose levels and mood.
Dihydroberberine
Nature's Metformin, without the associated pregnancy risks!
